Artificial Optimism?

12 March 2001, Turkish Daily News

The Turkish nation is awakening now from a government initiated "winter sleep" and will face many surprises just before spring officially starts on March 21. It means that Turkey is running to optimism with engine at full throttle and looking with more hope than before. The only question is whether this optimism is a real or an artificial one. Then, as every spring the people and nature do get a new feeling towards the life and the political life as well is getting optimistic. The Turks in general are optimistic people in their nature. How otherwise to explain that they are not running into the streets despite the fact that overnight they became 30 percent poorer than before? Is it really the luck of Turkish politicians to have such a "brave nation" which is taking all the economic and political developments with a great tolerance or is it that they indeed ignore the political class while showing no reactions and giving the message that they do not trust in them anymore?

Yes, indeed, the entire Turkish nation is fed up with this nondemocratic political class which fails permanently in order to bring Turkey to new shores and hopes. More, this political class and politicians from Ecevit to Mesut Yilmaz to Bahceli, they do harm Turkish democracy more than they anticipate. Actually, they are not aware how the history will judge then later on. Certainly not in good terms. This is also not the fate of Turkey to have such an unsuccessful and irresponsible politicians who do not resign despite the fact that they are responsible for this economic and political failure. To enter into politics in this country does not make any sense because the mediocrity is dominating the all party systems and political culture.

The world is watching and laughing at us. It is a shame for many Turks not to be able to explain to the outside world from the party system to traffic accidents during Bayram to killing animals on the streets which has nothing to do with Islam and its rules. Why the Turks became such a nation having no clear rules and orders? Or put simply -- social chaos. Something is wrong in this country and many skilled people are running from the country because it does not offer anymore any hope for those who want to bring the country really to the "level of the global civilization" as once Ataturk requested.

In all the discussions whether on TV or press or political debates in the coffee houses there is a tendency of national pessimism in many fields of the life and the country can not take any breath because all the veins are stopped. Turkey needs an urgent "by pass operation" otherwise the country's mood will more worsen. It is a pity that such a young nation can not look to the future with a real optimism. The man on the street can not look, even for the next days, with optimism because he does not know what will happen tomorrow. This country becomes more unreliable to its citizens. There is something wrong in this country. The coalition government is not taking any real political, juridical and economic decisions because there is no trust against each other. To "import new ministers" from America does not change the fact that Turkey is, for the man on the street, already an unbearable country. The new "Messiah," Kemal Dervis, speaks the same rhetoric the government has been speaking for the last two years, "We have to suffer a while, but then it will be fine with us," he says.

Such rhetoric does not sell anymore in Turkey. Suffering may not be the case of Turkish people. Turkey is, in reality, a very rich country. The problem is that it is badly managed and the nation can not bear this mismanagement further. Enough is enough. The Turkish people lost the confidence in the political system and Dervis is only a drop in the ocean. His failure is already planned. Then, as long as there is no political will to change the structural wrong doings, there is not the slightest hope to change something. Even if America and World Bank is helping Turkey get through this crisis it's not enough to solve the problem. Turkey's real problem is not money. It is her mentality and populist politicians. We will never be tired of repeating that this country has to change its mentality. Otherwise, the same mistakes will be made over and over.

The IMF policies were wrong and it neglected the human dimension and Turkey's peculiar realities is certainly not an argument to stay in power. Prime Minister Ecevit should be the first one made aware it. But he pretends as if he does not know. Turkey's image has never been so low as it is now in the last two decades. From the general amnesty to economic crisis, the last two years in political terms a real failure. To accept this not a virtue. The virtue would be to resign and open the way for the new government with an early election. It is clear that there will be no election this year because the coalition government can not afford it. They will not come earn 10 percent as the latest polls show it.

The Turkish people will live with the artificial optimism which was brought in with Dervis and the new financial promises by the western institutions at least for another year. Our analysis is that it will not change anything and Turks at the end will be much poorer than they were. We have to stop to lie ourselves. Change the system, open the way for the talented people and stop lying to yourselves. There are ways and means to get out of the crisis. There are enough examples in the world. The Turks do not deserve the image what they have it in the world now. If those with political responsibilities do not resign when they fail, Turkey will not be taken seriously. This is the primary concern for the Turkish mentality. Otherwise, Turks will further ignore the political class and this is the biggest danger for the democracy in the country. People like Dervis bring a temporary "artificial optimism." The real optimism lies in the heart of the people in the country and there are millions who could take the country out the crisis. Starting Monday, political life in Turkey is giving a new birth to optimism like nature is doing to the soil. This optimism is unavoidable because the coalition government can not go like this and the country is in a mood of an election. Are the elections not the reason for the political optimism? Then our optimism and expectation will be not an "artificial one."
