Turkish Cypriot  electorate on 19 April cast  their vote to express their reaction to many things that affect  their livelihood.  At the bottom of it, there is the uneasiness they feel as a result of 45 years of isolation from the outside world. They appreciate what Turkey has done for them, starting with the creation of a functional federation in 1960. At the time, Turkey secured iron-clad guarantees to protect  the Turkish Cypriots againts unforeseen- or maybe expected- contingencies.  But the international conjuncture whereby the non-aligned countries had their sway permitted Archbishop Makarios to persecute the Turkish Cypriot community.Later came the Greek Junta who recklessly  declared Enosis-Union of Cyprus with Greece. Turkey had to intervene under the terms of the Treety of  Guarantee- The Turkish Cyprot community thereafter lived in homogenous territory  when they could administer themselves,  form the Turkish Federated State of Cyprus, All the same, the international embargo continued. The root cause was that the Security Council Resolution of 4 March 1964 adopted when the Greek Cypriot gangs attacked the Turkish Cypriots, included a phrase talking of "The Goverment of Cyprus". The Greek Cypriots who ousted the Turkish Cypriots from goverment were accepted as the so-called government. That resolution was prepared by the 5 permanent  members of the Security Council and during the heat of the fighting in Cyprus, some of these permanent  members assured the Turkish Side that the Goverment of Cyprus was " the constitutionally formed goverment of Cyprus"; but this did not apply in practice. The Greek Cypriots posed as the Goverment, the Turkish Cypriots suffered under embargoes.

That was the position of the United Nations. Later, this position was taken over by the European Union when the Greek Cypriots applied in 1990 to be a member. The EU accepted them as a candidate, later admitted them as a member succumbing to the blackmail of Greece who threatened  to veto the membership of the Central and East European countries unless EU also adnits "Cyprus". At the time the EU members advocated the position that EU candidature would help the resolution of the Cyprus conflict. This did not become true. Even when the Turkish Cypriots voted for the Annan Plan, the Plan was rejected by the Greek Cypriots in the referendum. EU declared that the isolation of the Turkish Cypriots would be ended.

The promises of the EU to the Turkish Cypriots did not materialize; their isolation continued. Today, the Turkish Cypriots react, first to the Greek Cypriots who continue to isolate then from the outside world, second to the European Union who have been instrumental in misleading them;third to their goverment who needs their votes.

The voting in the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus clearly shows that  the masquerade of 45 years has reached its limit. The Turkish Cypriots came a long way since 1963. They andured the worst embergoes. With the  help of Turkey they managed to have a good administration, first the Turkish Federated State of Cyprus and then the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus. They have developed a good democracy, witness the last elections. All interested parties should heed of this cry when they say "enough is enough".
